Lesley is a Registered Nurse trained and certified as a Lymphoedema and Lymphatic therapist in the Dr Vodder method of manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) and combined decongestive therapy (CDT).

As a Dr. Vodder therapist Lesley attends re-certification training every 2 years.

How did Lesley become a 'lymphie'?
During her training as a Remedial Massage Therapist she was made aware of manual lymphatic drainage therapy (MLD). She received an MLD treatment for an overuse injury from road cycling and discovered rather 'miraculously' the oedema (swelling) decreased and returned to an almost normal appearance, had less pain and increased range of movement.
It intrigued her that a gentle non-invasive treatment with the lightest of touch could do this so enrolled for an MLD certificate introduction course through Hands On Lymphatics (Christchurch). This enabled her to treat certain health conditions and assist people with lymphoedema (chronic swelling).
Lesley then furthered her study, gaining certification in the Dr Vodder method of manual lymphatic drainage techniques and combined decongestive therapy. Emil Vodder was the grandfather of this structured lymphatic technique. This qualification enabled Lesley to become a member of the Australasian Lymphology Association (ALA) and be listed on the NLPR (National Lymphoedema Practitioner's Register) for New Zealand and Australia.
Lesley's vision is to see full government funding in every region throughout New Zealand for lymphoedema and lipoedema under Te Whatu Ora/Health NZ so people can manage these lifelong chronic conditions without the worry of affording treatments and compression garments.
Unfortunately, secondary lymphoedema is a risk associated with cancer treatments when lymph nodes and lymphatic vessels are removed and the system is impaired. Having had family members that have had to endure breast cancer treatment and lymphoedema, she has an empathy with how uncomfortable and debilitating the symptoms are.
When Lesley informs people what she does for work and mentions the word lymphatics, the response is often a puzzled expression. So please read these web pages they are full of information on your lymphatic system, how it functions and how we can improve the flow of lymph to assist many health conditions not just treating and managing lymphoedema.
